One of the unique features included highlighting some of the healthcare experiences by Slovenia, an emerging European Union (EU) country, and bridging them with the traditional western European country's healthcare system of Italy to lead by example, to promote innovative collaboration, to explore the latest health technologies, and to learn from each other's experiences. The overall theme included challenges in healthcare reform process, where sustainable political solutions to emerge from the darkness of the so-called "Black Box" were discussed. This was the first such opportunity for direct discussions with the audiences that included leaders from the diplomatic community, local and federal officials, leaders from academia, as well as international policy makers: those stakeholders who present powerful influential forces in healthcare reforms of various countries. Global Health Forum 2009 introduced e-health and telemedicine to the diplomatic community of the greater Washington area. The principal focus of this event held at the Embassy of Slovenia was directed at information/health technology and telemedicine with main objectives to conduct multidisciplinary discussions on issues contributing to globalization of health, science, societal and gender issues, as well as the ensuing impact on policy making. The main motto of the conference was "local is global" where One Health for One World is needed. The key topics covered during this event were those which present the foremost challenges in healthcare globally: inequities in access to care, cost containment and reduction, and quality of care improvement.
